Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes: Therapeutic Effects and Mechanisms of Action

Monday, February 25th, 2013

Over the past 50 years, there has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of interrelated metabolic disease states, including obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In modern Western nations, the population-based prevalence of insulin resistance is approaching 20%, and type 2 diabetes is now the most common endocrine disorder in adults. No longer a disease reserved for the aging population, type 2 diabetes is also on the rise in adolescents. Approximately 30% of all newly diagnosed cases (between 1982 and 1994 in the United States alone) are among people 10 to 19 years of age.

For those engaged in a struggle against this modern-day epidemic, Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes provides cutting-edge research to energize current efforts in diabetes prevention, management, and treatment. The most in-depth and up-to-date book on the topic, Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes presents a series of independent but related chapters authored by the foremost researchers of insulin resistance examining topics such as these:

-Physical inactivity as a primary cause for the rising incidence of insulin resistance

-The emergence of an “exercise-deficient” phenotype

-The effects of exercise training on selected aspects of substrate metabolism

-The role of endurance and resistance training programs for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance

-The identification of new molecular targets and pathways useful for the treatment of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes provides a four-part, in-depth examination of the relational nature of diabetes and physical activity. Part I begins with a description of the scope and extent of the “diabesity” epidemic. The risk factors for diabetes, the underlying causes of the epidemic, and its potential consequences are outlined as well as the role of physical inactivity in the pathogenesis of diabetes and plans for preventive exercise biology.

Part II continues with an examination of some of the major defects of substrate metabolism in individuals with insulin resistance, while in part III the authors discuss the impact of exercise interventions in the prevention, management, and treatment of type 2 diabetes. Part IV presents recent developments in molecular and cellular biology that may provide treatment therapies for the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

Based on extensive research, Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes presents a wealth of information to assist the biomedical and research community in creating prescriptive therapeutic tools for type 2 diabetes intervention—and offers hope for the alleviation of the global epidemic of insulin resistance.

Vanadium Compounds: Biochemical and Therapeutic Applications (Developments in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry)

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

The papers in this volume comprise invited reviews as well as original research papers presented at the Vanadium Symposium held July 29-31, 1994. Vanadium is a trace element and its compounds have been shown to exert a wide variety of insulin-like effects including the ability to lower hyperglycemia in several experimental models of diabetes mellitus. Because of the possibility that vanadium compounds may be able to serve as potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of diabetes, and possibly other diseases, this trace element has attracted the attention of biomedical researchers from a variety of fields. The Vanadium Symposium 1994 was therefore organized to facilitate exchange of ideas and increase interaction among researchers of different disciplines actively engaged in studying the biological actions of vanadium compounds. The papers are written by leading vanadium researchers and are grouped into three main sections: the chemistry, biochemical and physiological aspects, and potential therapeutic use and toxic effects of vanadium compounds. A good source of information on vanadium chemistry and biology.

Barefoot Science Therapeutic Insole, Foot Strengthening System, Medium, 2-Count

Saturday, December 1st, 2012

In no other field of medicine is bracing, cushioning or supporting the recommended long term solution for muscular skeletal issues that can be rehabilitated. Barefoot Science’s dominant dome technology is strategically shaped and located to interact with a key region of the foot. This region corresponds with the foot’s center of mass, the location of the body’s line of action through the foot, the apex of the foot’s 5 radiating arches, and the nerve engorged plantar aspect of the foot. This version has been designed with extra material around the toe area for trimming and is appropriate for shoes that feature a removable insole, such as most athletic and recreational shoes. Typically, the generic insole that comes with these types of shoe is slightly contoured and may interfere with how flat the Barefoot Science System is able to rest in the shoe, so it must be removed. After removing the generic insole, trim the Barefoot Science insole according to the Instructions and place it in the shoe, making sure it lies flat and flush against the ends and sides of the interior of the shoe.

Product Features

  • Clinically proven to effectively relieve pain and discomfort caused by flat feet, excessive pronation, plantar fasciitis, bunions, corns, calluses, fatigue and cramping, and to alleviate foot-related knee problems, shin splints, hip, and back pain
  • The Barefoot Science patented arch activation foot strengthening insole system is designed to gently work and rehabilitate the weak foot musclesand lazy arches that are often the cause of foot -related problems and pain
  • Barefoot Science provides the safe and natural neuromuscular stimulation required for optimal foot dynamics in response to increased activity levels, regardless of activity
  • Effectively improves blood circulation in the foot area and reduces the risk of calluses appearing
  • Improving circulation and reducing the possibility of venous pooling or neuropathy

* Caffeine
* Gluten
* Dairy
* Sweet fruits
* Baked Goods
* Processed food

THIS MEAL PLAN REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING TOOLS:
* Blender (7 snacks)
* Dehydrator (1 side dish)
* Crock pot (3 meals)
* Juicer (7 Beverages)
* Vegetable Steamer (9 vegetable side dishes)

LOW GLYCEMIC CARBOHYDRATES
In addition to the need for complete nutrient intake, many people have high blood sugar which requires them to eliminate high glycemic carbohydrates. The truth is everybody will benefit from a low glycemic diet. People that consume a diet high in refined carbohydrates are often fraught with health problems and don’t even know why. The International Diabetes Federation warns that even non-diabetics with postprandial glucose above 140 mg/dL (normally measured two hours after a meal) are at significant risk for many diseases including retinal damage to the eye, arterial blockage, oxidative stress, increased inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, reduced coronary blood flow and increased risk for cancer. There is also clinical evidence that high glucose levels interfere with proper hormone balance and serotonin levels.

GLUTEN FREE
Gluten is the protein found in wheat and other grains. Gluten sensitivity has been associated with blood disorders, dermatitis, endocrine disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, neurological disorders, connective tissue disorders, myositis, precancerous states and some cancers. If a person has high anti-gliadin antibodies the immune system is activated and inflammation is active throughout the body. Often eliminating gluten alone can have tremendous impacts on one’s health.

DAIRY FREE
Between lactose intolerance and sensitivity to casein, dairy products can cause problems anywhere from increasing silent inflammation to acute gastrointestinal, dermatological and respiratory problems. Eliminating dairy products from ones normal diet can produce immediate relief from seemingly chronic problems.

The Latest Applications For Cellmechanism Research in Drug Discovery

Designed to connect research on cell mechanisms with the drug discovery process, Therapeutic Targets: Modulation, Inhibition, and Activation introduces readers to a range of new concepts and novel approaches to drug screening and therapeutic drug targeting to help inform future avenues of drug research. Highly topical, this accessible edited volume features chapters contributed by respected experts from around the globe.

The book helps postgraduate students and professional scientists working in academia and industry understand the molecular mechanisms of pharmacology, current pharmacological knowledge, and future perspectives in drug discovery, focusing on important biochemical protein targets and drug targeting strategies for specific diseases. Examining the pharmacology of therapeutically undefined targets and their potential applications, it includes chapters on traditional therapeutic targets, including enzymes (phosphodiesterases and proteases), ion channels, and G protein-coupled receptors, as well as more recently identified avenues of exploration, such as lipids, nuclear receptors, gene promoters, and more.

Since different diseases require different targeting techniques, the book also includes dedicated chapters on strategies for investigating Alzheimer’s, diabetes, pain, and inflammation treatments. Concluding with a cross-sectional look at new approaches in drug screening, Therapeutic Targets is an invaluable resource for understanding where the next generation of drugs are likely to emerge.
