  • The Mediterranean Diet: A Clinician’s Guide for Patient Care

Over the past several years there has been increasing information in the medical literature regarding the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet.  Clinicians may not be informed on advances in nutrition, and studies have demonstrated that they do not spend much time discussing food as a means for promoting health with patients.  The Mediterranean Diet: A Clinician’s Guide for Patient Care is an essential new volume that serves as an update and a reference for clinicians on the Mediterranean diet.  Specific diseases and the effects the Mediterranean diet have on them are outlined.  Diseases and conditions that are outlined include heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, depression, cancer, allergies, asthma, arthritis and diabetes.  A detailed analysis of the specific nutrients in a Mediterranean diet and the food groups containing them is also included.  A useful guide containing daily meal plans and and an extensive recipe section prepared by a team of dieticians can be found in the patient resources section.  The Mediterranean Diet: A Clinician’s Guide for Patient Care provides a useful summary of the constituent components and health benefits of a Mediterranean diet to health professionals.

The Renal Patient’s Guide to Good Eating: A Cookbook for Patients by a Patient

As a patient, the author, Mrs. Curtis, relates her own experience in dealing with the renal diet. Through a positive approach, she demonstrates that sometimes when you “make the best of it,” the results are better than if the problem had not occurred. Fellow patients will recognize many of the author’s feelings and obstacles as their own. The second edition of THE RENAL PATIENT’S GUIDE TO GOOD EATING includes many new dishes as well as nutritional information for all recipes. This should make it easier for renal patients and their dietitians to determine how these dishes can best fit into their diet plans. The analyses can be used as a guide to appropriate serving sizes for each patient’s daily allowances of sodium, potassium and phosphorus. Great care has been taken to include complete nutrition information wherever possible. This cookbook is suitable for anyone. It does not separate the “dieters” from others. There will be no whispered requests for the salt shaker because the taste is there, in the form of herbs, spices, wine and other “allowed” flavorings. Especially valuable are the sections where salt is typically relied upon heavily, namely, meat, fish, poultry, sandwiches and vegetables. There are recipes ranging from appetizers to desserts, quick and simple to the more elaborate. The author provides guidelines for adjusting to a healthy heart diet, as well as to renal diets, which require more or less stringency. This book is certain to enlighten and inspire anyone with kidney disease, from the newly diagnosed to the more experienced. With this book, the doctor’s answer to his patient’s question “Could you give me some more ideas for meals?” can be answered with “I have just the book for you!”

  • Educating Your Patient with Diabetes (Contemporary Diabetes)

Diabetes affects an estimated 20 million people in the United States, with many people remaining unaware that they suffer from the disease. While the number of diabetics continues to rise, the number of caregivers who specialize in diabetes treatment does not. In Educating Your Patient with Diabetes, Katie Weinger and Catherine Carver assemble commentary from a panel of leading diabetes practitioners and researchers and put together a highly readable guide to supplying patients with diabetes with the information and ability to successfully cope with their disease. The authors and editors provide substantive data on successful models of diabetes education and the process of educating diabetes sufferers. Additional chapters discuss diabetes in pregnancy, the challenge of weight and diabetes management in clinical practice, and diabetes education in geriatric populations. Timely and accessible, Educating Your Patient with Diabetes is a must have for all diabetes educators, physician assistants, nurses, and endocrinologists who endeavor to support their patients’ diabetes self-care efforts and help them maximize the opportunities for patient learning.

Pen Devices to Improve Patient Adherence With Insulin Therapy in Type 2 Diabetes (Postgraduate Medicine)

Abstract: As the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus increases, the related health and economic burdens also increase as the majority of these patients with type 2 diabetes do not achieve adequate glycemic control. There are several barriers to effectively managing type 2 diabetes, some of which can be overcome by insulin pen devices, thereby improving treatment acceptance/adherence and clinical outcomes in the primary care setting. Studies have shown that patients significantly prefer insulin pen devices compared with vial and syringe, and that the use of pen devices results in improved patient adherence to therapy, fewer hypoglycemic episodes, and reduced associated health care costs.
