Exercise and Diabetes: A Clinician’s Guide to Prescribing Physical Activity

Friday, June 21st, 2013

Physical movement has a positive effect on physical fitness, morbidity, and mortality in individuals with diabetes. Although exercise has long been considered a cornerstone of diabetes management, many health care providers fail to prescribe it. In addition, many fitness professionals may be unaware of the complexities of including physical activity in the management of diabetes. Giving patients or clients a full exercise prescription that take other chronic conditions commonly accompanying diabetes into account may be too time-consuming for or beyond the expertise of many health care and fitness professionals.

The purpose of this book is to cover the recommended types and quantities of physical activities that can and should be undertaken by all individuals with any type of diabetes, along with precautions related to medication use and diabetes-related health complications. Medications used to control diabetes should augment lifestyle improvements like increased daily physical activity rather than replace them.

Up until now, professional books with exercise information and prescriptions were not timely or interactive enough to easily provide busy professionals with access to the latest recommendations for each unique patient. However, simply instructing patients to “exercise more” is frequently not motivating or informative enough to get them regularly or safely active. This book is changing all that with its up-to-date and easy-to-prescribe exercise and physical activity recommendations and relevant case studies.

Read and learn to quickly prescribe effective and appropriate exercise to everyone.

For most people with diabetes, the first line of defense is adding exercise to the daily routine. Everyone with diabetes should be getting some physical activity into their lifestyle. The key to good diabetes self-care is simple: stay active by making the most of the activities that are already part of a person’s daily life. The “I Hate to Exercise” Book for People with Diabetes shows people with diabetes how to exercise safely and to add exercise to their lifestyle with minimal difficulty. Readers learn how to ease into more exercise, build an active lifestyle, create a fun, low-impact walking program, set realistic goals, chart and evaluate progress. Most of these exercises use very simple equipment: a sturdy chair, some hand weights, and some elastic bands.

ACSM’s Exercise Management for Persons with Chronic Diseases and Disabilities-3rd Edition

Monday, May 13th, 2013

Now in its third edition, ACSM’s Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities offers both exercise and health professionals the latest research and applications for integrating exercise into the treatment of 49 chronic diseases and disabilities. This reference was developed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and written by contributors with significant clinical and research experience in exercise programming for people with chronic conditions.

ACSM’s Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities, Third Edition, contains tools to assist in the coordination of exercise within an integrated model of patient care. The updated edition presents a framework for determining functional capacity in persons with chronic diseases and disabilities and offers guidance in developing appropriate exercise programming to optimize functional capacity and reduce the compounding effects of exercise intolerance.

Unlike textbooks on special populations, ACSM’s Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities provides an overview of exercise management and addresses a wider spectrum of chronic diseases and disabilities. A consistent and concise format allows readers quick access to the pathology of interest, training and response to exercise, management of medications, and recommendations and special considerations of exercise testing and programming. Within the text, diseases and disorders are organized into six sections: cardiovascular; pulmonary; metabolic; orthopedic; neuromuscular; and cognitive, psychological, and sensory. Information presented for each of the 49 conditions is based on the most current clinical research.

The third edition includes an added color and contains new chapters on metabolic syndrome, stress and neuropsychiatric disorders, multiple chronic conditions, and fibromyalgia. Information on professional preparation in serving patients with chronic diseases or disabilities has also been added. In addition, reformatted tables provide quicker reference for testing and prescription data. Recommended readings found at the end of the book offer resources for more in-depth study.

The text also includes case studies for each condition. These cases, drawn from the contributor’s clinical practice, illustrate how scientific research and clinical experience can combine in the development of an informed program of care for each patient. Case studies follow a set format, beginning with an overview and a subjective objective assessment plan (SOAP) report, followed by an exercise program and a follow-up statement for select cases.

ACSM’s Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities, Third Edition, presents exercise as a viable component in the care and treatment of chronic disease and disability and offers guidance for appropriate exercise prescription that can positively affect functional capacity and slow or prevent exercise intolerance. As the prescription of exercise for persons with chronic conditions increases, exercise and health professionals require the appropriate data and tools to serve these individuals. ACSM’s Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities will assist professionals in translating the science of exercise physiology into the art of practicing exercise medicine.

The Smarter Science of Slim: What the Actual Experts Have Proven About Weight Loss, Dieting, & Exercise

Saturday, April 20th, 2013

Since the 1970’s we have been told that eating less and exercising more is healthy and leads to lasting weight loss. Since then obesity, diabetes, and other diet related diseases have risen to epidemic levels, overtaken tobacco as leading cause of death in the United States, and account for over $190 billion a year in health-care spending.

Consistent with these trends, but in sharp contrast to what the food, fitness, and pharmaceutical industries tell us, Jonathan Bailor’s new book The Smarter Science of Slim, the single largest scientific analysis of health and fitness ever conducted, proves that eating less and exercising more harms our health and leads to fat gain 95.4 percent of the time.

The Smarter Science of Slim simplifies the analysis of over 1,100 scientific studies to bridge the gap between the scientific world and the everyday world, dispel the myths and marketing that have fueled the current health care crisis, and provide a proven lifestyle for lasting wellness by focusing on quality of food and exercise and then eating more and exercising less — but smarter. The Smarter Science of Slim is endorsed by the world-wide scientific community including top doctors at the Harvard Medical School, John Hopkins, and UCLA, and approved as curriculum for registered dieticians (RDs) by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

“We all know what the typical approach leads to,” remarked Bailor who is confident that the last forty years of research from the most brilliant medical minds around the world prove that we can use this atypical “eat more, exercise less but smarter” approach to generate atypical results: improved health and reduced obesity and diet-related disease rates.

Eat Better Tips (or how I lost 115 lbs in 15 months without being able to exercise!!)

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

These are six simple tips that I used when I needed to lose a lot of weight and was not able to exercise due to a back condition. This isn’t a long read. I give you the few things I followed and why they’re really common sense that I just never thought about until it was almost too late.

Hopefully it will inspire you and help you reach your goal, no matter if its 15 or 115 lbs. you need to lose. Or maybe you can’t or just don’t have time to exercise to make up for your bad eating habits.

This is not some fad diet or miracle cure. It’s just some simple things that are common sense but most of us don’t normally consider that for me personally made an incredible difference and allowed me to get dramatically healthier without dieting or starving myself. The simplest thing I could say is that I made it a simple math problem of needing to get from point A to point B and what I was doing was driving in the opposite direction. It was surprisingly simple once I had a plan that was just as simple and didn’t require dramatic changes which never worked for me in the past when tried.

Even if this can spark your own answer to your personal math problem it will be well worth both of our time.

Fantasy Healthball – Football Edition: The Fantasy Sports Diet and Exercise Program Where You Take on the Pros!

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Fantasy Healthball is the health and nutrition program rooted in fantasy sports. It is part fantasy game, part science, and all attitude. You compete directly with professional football players to meet your health goals. This personal approach is drastically different from other diet plans. It isn’t about conforming to some new fad like low-carb or high-protein or low-sugar. It’s about you and using your passion for sports to propel you to achieve your personal health goals.

Starting as a popular website (FantasyHealthball.com) launched at the halftime of 2008’s Super Bowl XLII, Fantasy Healthball turns passion for football into passion for great health and turns spectators into active players. You’ll be actively engaged in the pro football game, without having to worry about a 300-pound linebacker planting you in the artificial turf!

All of the great things about fantasy football combine to motivate and push you to improve your daily health challenges – and your long term health. By selecting one of our competition methods, the “on the field” actions of pro football players will relate directly to your healthy actions throughout the week. You’ll earn “Healthpoints” for executing good decisions just like the pros earn points for executing a successful scoring play. The weekly result will be a win or a loss as you attempt to have a good season and even make the playoffs! When it is the off-season, you can play a health-only (no fantasy football) game called Training Camp against your friends, family, or yourself.

Fantasy Healthball combines no-nonsense “Dr. Oz sort of health advice” wrapped neatly in a fantasy sports package built on competition and fun. It is like a powerful combination of Nutrition for Dummies, Dieting for Dummies, Eat This Not That! Supermarket Survival Guide, and your favorite fantasy sports website! You’ll learn about calories, weight loss, eating strategies, exercise, and even how to perform a “Pantry and Refrigerator Exorcism!”

Understanding Diabetes Type 2: Recipes & Exercise Plans for the Newly Diagnosed (Physician Support Guides)

Wednesday, December 26th, 2012

Today, on average, 1,700 people will be diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. This guide is designed to reinforce information given to the newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes patient. Doctors have little time to go over what diabetes is and how to manage diabetes through diet and exercise for a long and healthy life. The goal of this guide is to put the doctor’s instructions in plain English.

Type 2 diabetes is initially managed by increasing exercise and dietary modification. If blood glucose levels are not adequately lowered by these measures, medications such as
Metformin or insulin may be needed. There is typically the requirement to routinely check blood sugar levels.

Rates of diabetes have increased markedly over the last 50 years in parallel with obesity. As of 2010 there are approximately 285 million people with the disease compared to around 30 million in 1985. Long-term complications from high blood sugar can include heart disease, strokes, diabetic retinopathy where eyesight is affected, kidney failure which may require dialysis, and poor circulation of limbs leading to amputations.

Type 2 Diabetes: Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally – No Diets, No Special Foods, No Excessive Exercise

Friday, December 21st, 2012

You don’t have to live with type 2 diabetes for the rest of your life! In this book, you’ll learn how to reverse type 2 diabetes naturally with no diets, no special foods and no excessive exercise. Coming from a man who has done it himself against tremendous odds, you’ll be guided through your own diabetes solution. And Brendan even reveals a copy of his medical proof showing he has reversed his diabetes to you in the book! This method is not only proven, but it is sustainable too – you can reverse diabetes and live diabetes-free for the rest of your life!

• Learn what the driving forces of type 2 diabetes are and how to overcome them.

• Discover how to use this book to work together with your doctor to design a program that integrates natural diabetes solutions with your doctor’s plans for you (includes pre-made charts to make this process a snap).

• Discover foods and exercises that can become a part of your routine easily, without leaving you feeling deprived or overwhelmed.

• Guided plans to help you establish sustainable habits that can reverse diabetes forever.

A Note From the Author:

My name is Brendan McDonagh. I am a life coach, wellness coach and former 5 star chef. When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I became my own health coach and thankfully, I was able to reverse my diabetes and receive a complete bill of health.

I started to see positive results only one month into my system and was effectively clear of type 2 diabetes after one year, but in being political with the way medical records work, I continued to present tests for 3 years, so as to show my medical test results and eliminate any doubt. This also kept my doctor on my side. I did all the experiments and tests on myself while keeping meticulous records, and in doing so, I discovered a much easier way for people to go about managing and reversing diabetes.

You’ll find that my approach is different than most, and for good reason. I’ve been there. I was where you are – in total despair. I was frustrated by reading and hearing so much information, all of which seemed like it was designed to make me want to give up. Against it all, I chose a different route. I took a path that led me to a full recovery and I am now in the best health of my life. I want that for you too!

I’m here to tell you that this isn’t the end! This is only the beginning of the journey toward health and vitality. You too have everything you need right here and right now to change your future!
