This volume assesses the significance of hypertriglyceridemia as a cardiovascular risk factor in non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients and explores new strategies for reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease in these patients. The contributors present epidemiological and familial evidence linking plasma triglycerides with coronary heart disease, analyze the plasma lipoprotein changes resulting from hypertriglyceridemia, and establish a connection between triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and atherogenesis. Extensive pharmacological and clinical studies presented suggest that nicotinic acid and acipimox can reduce atherogenic risk factors in diabetic patients by regulating lipoprotein metabolism. Close attention is also given to the role of diet and exercise in treatment of hypertriglyceridemia.
