From the author: Intensive diabetes therapy can reduce the long-term microvascular complications of Type 1 diabetes and improve glucose control. Managing the demands of intensive therapy however, often poses a burden on adolescents and their families. Through multidisciplinary teaming, the school health office can facilitate active participation in treatment, coordinate services, and maximize use of community resources. This paper presents a general overview of intensive diabetes therapy, psychosocial implications of chronic illness in adolescence, effects of chronic illness on the family, and behavior change strategies to improve adherence with disease management guidelines.

From the author: This study explored opinions, concerns, and recommendations regarding care of Type 1 diabetes in schools. Thirty adolescent females and their parents participated in semi- structured, individual interviews that were audiotaped, transcribed, coded, and qualitatively analyzed. Responses emerged in three categories: knowledge/training of school staff; foods offered/available at school; and school rules. Participants expressed concerns that school personnel, particularly classroom teachers, possess limited knowledge of diabetes; that healthy food/beverage options are limited in the cafeteria, vending machines, and classrooms; and that school rules impede self-care of diabetes. Implications for enhancing diabetes management at school are noted.

Diabetes 101: The Number One Killer of African Americans [Article]

Monday, February 11th, 2013

This article will educate you on why there are so many African Americans dying, going blind or losing limbs to diabetes? Diabetes is a ‘lifelong’ manageable disease in which there is no cure. However, it can be controlled and the goal is not to let it control you.

Diabetes is not and should not be a death sentence for anyone; however, due to the lack of information and education, many African Americans do die from the disease. It is after all the NUMBER ONE KILLER of African Americans!

Many people are misdiagnosed with diabetes because again it is one of the diseases that is extremely hard to recognize or diagnose. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC.gov), over 40% of people or millions of people are walking around with diabetes already ravaging their bodies.

Diabetes is sometimes not detected until something terrible happens such as a heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. Not only is it extremely hard to diagnosis, but the symptoms of diabetes mimics many other diseases. So finding out if you have diabetes will be key to living with the disease and managing it correctly.
