Makes a rational case for the Paleo lifestyle I’ve been seeing a lot of references to the “paleo diet” recently, and curiosity drove me to look it up. It’s basically a nutritional plan based on the diet of wild plants and animals that our ancient ancestors are believed to have consumed during the Paleolithic era–a period which ended around 10,000 years ago with the development of agriculture and grain-based diets. First popularized in the 1970s, this nutritional concept has been promoted by a number of authors and researchers. Paleolithic nutrition is based on the premise that modern humans are genetically adapted to the diet of their Paleolithic ancestors and that human genetics haven’t significantly changed since the dawn of agriculture, and therefore an ideal diet for human health and well-being is one that resembles our ancestral diet.Author Ravi Kishore has written one of a growing number of books promoting the paleo diet (I searched for “paleo” + “diet” in Amazon books and got more than 1,100 hits). He promotes the health benefits of the paleo diet, which features fewer refined carbohydrates and more protein and fat. Carbohydrates come primarily from non-starchy vegetables and fresh fruits rather than grains. Most of these foods have a low glycemic index, so they’re digested and absorbed at a slower rate, so blood sugar levels don’t spike, a major consideration for diabetics. Proponents claim that the diet contains enough vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants for good health. In the book, the author explains how and why the paleo diet promotes a healthier lifestyle, despite some practices which contradict most conventional nutrition advice (for example, consuming more meat). The Paleo diet is also claimed to reduce or eliminate many autoimmune disorders and a number of serious diseases. The book has an FAQ section which answers other questions that many people ask about the paleo lifestyle. The book includes lists of specific foods that may be consumed on the Paleo diet, as well as a list of foods that are taboo. There are tips for transitioning to the Paleo diet as painlessly as possible for both adults and children. A sample weekly meal plan is included, followed by recipes for the sample meals. I have to say that the meal plans and recipes were generally very appealing. The most noticeable difference from traditional nutrition plans is the absence of wheat and other grains, and milk products. The paleo diet is not without controversy, and the author tackles some of the arguments head-on. For example, the paleo diet does not include milk or other dairy products (it does include eggs, however). The author notes that this could theoretically result in a child not getting enough calcium, but other allowed foods rich in calcium will provide enough of the essential mineral. My review is not necessarily an endorsement of the paleo diet, but the author has done a fine job of explaining paleo, and he makes a rational case for adopting the paleo diet.A review copy of the book was provided by the author.

`If you find conventional medicine is not helping, try the Paleo Diet’ By now everyone has at least heard the term Paleo Diet – the diet of our ancestors, the Cavemen – but aside from headlines few have really explored what this diet is all about nor read enough about it to decide the merits. And that is the reason Ravi Kishore calls this a Beginners book. He carefully explains that this is not a fad diet but and eating plan to be followed for life. Our ancestors ate diets primarily of wild game, berries and nuts – not the ingredients we consume that lead to physiologic disorders, obesity, hampered immune systems, diseases and even cancer and diabetes and coronary disease and death. The old adage `you are what you eat’ certainly summarizes why everyone should embrace the Paleo Diet. Most contemporary foods include processed foods and foods high in salt and sugar and empty calories and toxins. The Paleo diet emphasizes protein from seafood, poultry and certain lean meats, carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables, fiber from grains and grain products – and the result is a diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, plant phytochemicals and the right kid of fat and sugar form the right sources.Once the facts of the diet are discussed, Kishore discusses the immediate and long range benefits of the Paleo diet – resolving health conditions, improving our immune systems, weight loss and avoiding the occurrence of diabetes and heart disease. Or as he puts it, `As the Paleo Diet eliminates those foods people are most commonly allergic to, the weight comes off and stays off for good, because It includes unprocessed food list, reduces bloat, high in healthy fats, high in fruits and vegetables, lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, prevent diabetes, improves your digestion, markers of Inflammation, reduce acne, and help with weight loss.’The book contains Recipes for Beginners – a week’s worth of healthy, satisfying options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner such as chicken, soups, muffins, salad and yes, even desserts that fall into the Paleo Diet plan. His recipes are easy to follow, trustworthy, and very well organized for the beginner. For those who want a soli but easy to understand explanation of the Paleo Diet concept, this little affordable book supplies just that. Grady Harp, June 13

Great book for Paleo diet Beginners Yes, its a great book if you are thinking of going with the Paleo diet plan. It not only has all the info you need about the origin and basics of the diet, but also detailed diet plans and a host of original recipes that I loved. The chapter concerning Paleo diet and diseases is pretty cool stuff, unbelievable at first but true and proven by science! The primary reason why I say that the book is good is because of the FAQ section. The book does not only have paragraph after paragraph of info but useful and very common questions that a beginner generally has, are answered satisfactorily in a list of FAQs.Further, the tricks for making the transition to Paleo easier that are provided in this book are bound to be handy for all beginners. The author clearly explains the difference between the diet we eat currently and the diet that our ancestors used to eat, that is recommended on the Paleo diet. We are able to make a clear distinction between what is allowed on the diet and what is not. This understanding can go a long way in helping one stick to the diet. There is also the part where the author talks about the Paleo diet for athletes, which people will find useful. Then there are a bunch of good recipes, from Paleo lunches and dinners to Paleo Snacks and Appetizers. Some of these also fit into the meal plans that are provided.Overall, its a useful and affordable book and one of the best ones to get you started on the Paleo diet.
