Sugar Plant Herb 25 Seeds-0 Calories – Stevia rebaudiana by Seeds and Things

A wholesome alternative to processed sugar and chemically-derived artificial sweeteners, Stevia is becoming more and more popular among health-conscious individuals. It’s 20 to 30 times sweeter than sugar cane, yet is non-caloric and doesn’t promote tooth decay!

Stevia is easy to use, too. Just drop a leaf into hot or cold drinks, or use it like a bay leaf to sweeten meat and vegetables dishes while they cook — it’s heat-stable! Grind the dried leaves and sprinkle them into cereals and other cold dishes as you would sugar. You can even extract the oil!

The plant is a tender perennial for sowing indoors in a brightly-lit spot. It needs well-drained soil and very little else to grow vigorously, sporting small white flowers in summer. Plant reaches 1 foot tall and about 1 1/2 feet wide.

  1. The Stevia seeds I received were not viable I bought 3 packs of these seeds and tried for over a month to get them to germinate. I tried 3 different methods without a single germination. I was about to give up on growing Stevia when I noticed that my local Big Box Home store (the one with the blue sign) had Burpee brand Stevia seeds so I picked up a pack. I bought them on Saturday and had germination by the following Tuesday.Since the successful germination method I used on the Burpee seeds was the same as one of the methods I used on the unsuccessful Hinterland seeds, I must conclude that the problem was with the seeds rather than with the method or the gardener. The price of a pack of the store bought seeds was 3X the price of a pack of these seeds but after freight and frustration, in the end the store bought seeds were much less expensive. On a positive note, Hinterland did send me a pack of designer tomato seeds as a consolation gift. I haven’t tried to germinate them yet though.

  2. useless totally useless. not one of the several items that I purchased from this company have sprouted. The site provides no/poor information regarding germination times & (pre)stratification.

  3. they are ok I got two of these plants growing right now and they are doing very well in the Florida heat. would have gave them 5 stars but the sprout rate was not that great on them. I have heard that’s pretty typical for Stevia anyway. I planted half the seeds I had gotten and gotten (about 15) and got 4 sprouts. two died off pretty quickly and got two very nice healthy plants. I think I will go ahead and plant the second batch now because I suspect the seeds are old and probably will have no chance of sprouting any next year. all and all ok deal if you cant find at local plant or big box store but with price and shipping could have gotten at local store cheaper.
